spring cleaning #30

I was surprised to learn that we should move our library pictures to Flickr or put them on CD, but it makes sense. Due to our previous assisgnments, my p drive and z drive are pretty clean, but I did find some old unneeded library pictures on my z drive and I deleted them. So things are pretty tidy!

I took this to heart and did clean up my work e-mail folders. The suggestion to make them like your paper folders was good, except now I have to organize my paper folders! Did delete a lot of old e-mails and set up more e-mail folders. So still have cleaning to do, but made a start.

I make lists all the time, and have been through several trainings on getting organized. It was interesting to read GTD, as it confirms and reminds me to keep on track with staying organized. I tend to use the Franklin Covey planners as I like using paper.

#26 sharing music

I looked at Project Playlist and searched for an indie band from Australia I liked, figuring this would be a good way to test the music available. Found seven entries for this band and was able to listen to some music. Went ahead and created an acct on Project Playlist. Found more songs for this group on imeem which was pretty neat. Tried myspace and didn't find any songs by this group even though I was looking in the music section of myspace. Of course, I did find an person with a myspace page by this name, which may have been done by the band but it was pretty empty. They haven't done anything with it.
Decided not to create music on jamstudio as there's enough bad music in the world already.

I found it really easy to burn my song to my CD. I do use CDs still in my car, although I can see that a MP3 player would be great, especially since my new car has a MP3 player jack. However, to find the time to download music might be difficult, especially since my husband and I share a computer. And he's always on it!

I think the marketplace will veer towards MP3 rather than CDs, but artists will have to get paid, and I have faith that the music business will figure all this out. It may be that more and more artists sell their music directly to the consumer from now on.

Well, I looked around at napster, itunes and yahoo. I probably will go with itunes or yahoo as I like their prices. I like that itune is 99 cents a song as I'm not sure I would use enough to warrant the 12.95 a month for napster. I like that itunes has tutorials for beginners. Yahoo is only $6 a month and I might spend that much a month.
I did look at HCPL and I did look at the free download sites. Was successful in downloading a song to my office computer and then to the branch Zen Nano. But can see where I'd want to get songs from one of the paid sites to get my favorite artists and songs.
My favorite radio stations do have live music, but I already knew that. Just haven't taken advantage of it.

week 10 #23 the end

I've really enjoyed this. My favorite things were blogging, flicker, wikis, and digital media. I think this has given me more confidence in trying new things on the web, and I think I have a better attitude towards learning about these things. I was surprised at how much of this I could use in my personal life. I'm thinking about creating a personal blog, and looking forward to doing more with photos online, and hoping to do more downloading of music and books.
Here at HCPL, I think we could do more with wikis, flicker, and maybe we could explore some of the things libraries are doing with social networks like Second Life.
I'd like to learn something basic which is how to burn CDs. Also what exactly is Flash?

week 9 #22

Found LibriVox pretty limited, due to their public domain catalog. Wowio had some pretty neat stuff. All in all, I thought our digital catalog was pretty impressive. I found independent music from India (Spirit of India) that looked interesting. And I thought it was neat that we had a Bill Engvall video that could be downloaded. And I found a cookbook called Dream Dinners that looked interesting.

week 9 #21

Went to yahoo, but had trouble finding anything interesting about libraries. When I did find something, the recording didn't make sense as it refered to a picture, so I still had to go to the accompanying print article to see the picture. So I wound up reading the info anyway. then I went to podcastalley.com which was more user friendly that yahoo's audio selections, and I did find some library podcasts. Did an RSS feed through bloglines to "uncontrolled vocabulary" which seems to be a weekly call in show on library topics. Have to say, it was pretty boring and I was most unimpressed. Can see using this for training purposes, like attending a podcast for a conference that I can't attend in person.

week 9 #20

I like youtube because it's fun, and I like the way they organize the videos. I looked at videos on how to do push-ups, as I was pretty sure that I was not doing them correctly in my home workouts. Found a couple that were helpful. In library web-sites, videos could be used to publicize events, and programs, to catch people's interest, but of course, the problem of bandwidth is always there.

Sample doc: Thanksgiving: wet and rainy, moving day for my daughter, dust & pet hair, family aggravations, good food, being together, good friends, too much cigarette smoke!

Thoughts: can see some uses for this, like the alternative to microsoft office.

week 8 #18

poked around in myspace, and facebook. My space does have more entertainment stuff but my daughter has a facebook account. If I was to do anything with this, I'd probably get on yahoo 360 as I already have a yahoo account. Still prefer face to face.

week 7 #17

There's a lot of things I love about technology: being able to call for help on my cell phone when I have car trouble., being able to instant message my daughter, e-mail. I think we have to watch out for getting too much technology, like when I had a answering machine, a voice mail account, etc. and I had three things to check whenever I wanted to see if someone was trying to reach me. We have to make sure the technology works for us, and doesn't create more work for us.

finally get caught up a bit. enjoying looking at wiki. Especially enjoyed the library sucess wiki. I can see using a wiki for committees and other uses.

week 6 #15

Found these readings very interesting. The article on avoiding the 3 icebergs affirmed what I already have felt, that I need to avoid building a "just in case" collection, that we can't train all our patrons and really are wasting our time by trying to do so, and that we can't wait for people to come to us. I think a lot of the things we're doing are moving us into the right direction, this training among them. The article on cooperation had a great idea: a google map mashup of local libraries. Wouldn't it be great if we need something like this showing our libraries and HPL libraries? We spend a lot of time figuring which library a caller is closer to, and sometimes its a HPL library. The 2.0 librarian manifesto was inspiring to me. Library 2.0 to me means a constantly changing, exciting place to work and offer services to users.

When I did the searches by keyword and tags, some of the results were the same. When I did the blog directory search, the results were completely different, which makes sense. When I explored the popular blogs, searches, and videos, I found some things that were quite interesting. I like the boingboing blog which it seems is the most popular blog of all, at least for right now.

Have used the library's del. account some to see what websites might be handy for ref. Tried to install my own account but it wouldn't install the buttons on my home computer, probably because I have Vista and my husband has a google toolbar, etc. I can see the potential.

week 5 number 12

Tried to get into Library Elf and their server is down. Did get to see the demo yesterday and it looks like it would be a big help for patrons/staff who check out lots of stuff. Since I only check out for myself, I can usually keep track of my stuff pretty well. Will try again to get into elf.
